Planetary Stage Three Planets

Planetary Gear Set Components: Sun, Planets, Ring and Carrier

A practical guide to the four core members of an epicyclic gear set and the information needed before specifying a replacement.

What engineers should confirm

Planetary gearing should be selected as a complete load path rather than by ratio alone. Confirm continuous and peak torque, input speed, duty cycle, required ratio, backlash target, mounting orientation and the radial or axial load acting at the output.

Data for replacement or custom manufacture

Provide an existing model or nameplate when available. For custom gears, include tooth count, module or diametral pitch, pressure angle, helix data, face width, bore or spline, material, heat treatment and the mating component information. A dimensioned drawing or representative sample reduces compatibility risk.

Inspection and release

Final inspection scope can include dimensions, runout, tooth geometry, hardness, contact condition and material documents when specified in the RFQ. Acceptance criteria should be agreed before production.
